Hamburg, 14th of January— InnoGames, the leading vanguard browser game creator, today announced that the English version of the browser based game Grepolis is made available.
“The Ancient Greek civilization represents the roots of our democratic culture and is still a formative influence for our society. The era was extremely progressive in terms of science, politics, sport and culture. This obviously makes for a fitting setting for a strategy game”, InnoGames CEO Eike Klindworth reveals the motivation for Grepolis. Besides the epic background, practical reasons make Greece a perfect background for this strategy game. More than 3.000 islands belong to the country. In Grepolis, there are about 20.000 per game world – so ground and marine battles are easily combined. Thus, Grepolis requires a powerful navy just as much as a forceful army.
Another essential element for the era will not be missed in Grepolis: the gods of Greek mythology. Zeus, Poseidon, Hera and Athena are all playing a role in Grepolis. But the ambitious player will have to find out, which one he can use best – and who he should pray to the most. Whilst Hera raises the population’s contentment, Zeus destroys hostile buildings with his lightning. Several scientific institutions that explore the multiplicity of technologies and provide a culture valuation important for expansion, complete the gaming depth of Grepolis.
The German version has already been released in December 2009 and was a huge success there. It was nominated for the biggest German computer games award (“Deutscher Entwicklerpreis”) in two categories. Grepolis is the third game, published by InnoGames, one of the biggest developers and publishers for online games. InnoGames has already published Tribal Wars and The West that are actively played by six million users around the world.
The players start on a Greek island and found a polis, which is the Greek word for town. Having built up their hometowns, the user quickly focuses on expansion. At this point, the game offers several options to the user. Will he first take control over his own island and attack the neighbors settled here? Should he conquer the ocean and found more towns on other islands? Or would alliances with other polis be the smartest move? The options open to the players are various.
